Objective To investigate the risk factors of childhood asthma. Methods A case-control study design was used, in order to explore child hood asthma risk factors in this area questionnaire survey was conducted during October 2007to January 2008 at 1st affiliated hospital of Xin jiang medical university . 100 asthmatic children (case group) who sought medical care both in and out patient basis,100 (control group )otherwise healthy children free from respiratory disease and allergic disease who were sought medical care in a outpatient basis .data was analyzed using SPSS13.00 statistical software .risk factors for asthma were evaluated by logistic regression in univariate and multivariate analyses. Results Univariate analysis identified family history of asthma (OR: 15.881; 95% CI: 6.964 to 36.217), family history of atopy (OR: 6.619; 95% CI: 3.569 to 12.276 ), atopy (OR: 27.341; 95% CI: 10.224 to73.115), acute respiratory infections(OR; 95%CI: to ),artificial feeding (OR: 5.114; 95%CI: 2.205 to 11.859 ), maternal passive smoking during pregnancy(OR: 2.160; 95% CI: 1.228 to 3.800 ),passive smoking of children during the first two years of life (OR: 2.251; 95% CI: 1.278 to 3.964 ), playing toys made from foam (OR: 4.465; 95%CI: 7.022 to 9.859),kitchen smoke(OR: 5.114 ; 95% CI: 2.205 to 11.859),exposure to paint odor(OR: 4.579; 95% CI: 1.764 to 11.983 ) ,type of indoor heating(OR: 0.235 ; 95% CI: 0.101 to 0.548), moisture of house(OR: 2.144; 95% CI: 1.078 to 4.264 ),choosy in food(OR: 5.945; 95CI: 2.829 to 12.494 ) as risk factors. The tendency still existed after excluding all the possible confounding factors in the multivariate logistic regression model, study results showed that(p<0.05)Family history of asthma, atopy, frequency of acute respiratory infections, preference to sweet food, playing toys made from foam increase the risk of childhood asthma. OR value : respectively (14.676, 11.321, 4.819, 1.903, 6.387). Conclusion family history of asthma, atopy, frequency of acute respiratory infections, preference to sweet foods, playing toys made from foam increase the risk of childhood asthma. improvement, avoidance and control these risk factors are very important to prevent asthma occurrence and decrease the severity of asthma attack in childhood asthma.
