Characteristics And Surgical Treatment For Lumbar Intervertebral Disc Herniation In The Elderly Patients

Objective: To study the characteristics and surgical treatment for lumbar intervertebral disc herniation in the elderly patients .Methods: to collect clinical date of 53 cases with lumbar intervertebral disc herniation in the elderly patients were restrospective analyzed of the clinical characterictics and operative effect from June, 2005 to november,2007 at the center of Orthopedic department of first teaching hospital of Xin Jiang Medical University,including 27 males and 26 females, with the mean age of 69 years, underwented lumbar posterior approach, Among them, the extended fenestrations of vertebral lamina with posterior approach were done in 26 cases, hemi-laminectomy was done in 16 cases and laminectomy was done in 11 cases, The surgical results were evaluated with Japanese Orthopedic Association score(JOA score ).Results: 48cases were followed up and average period was 6-month ,out of followed up were 5 case according to a assessment of JOA score postoperationally, excellent outcome achieved in 14( 29.2%), good 27(56.2%), faire 5(10.4%), poor 2(4.2%), the increase Rate was85.4%. Compared to pre-operation and after operation for 6- month, there was a signicant increase of JOA score (P<0.05). conclusion: Elderly cases with lumbar intervertbral disc herniations has long nature history, clinical feature was not typical compare with youngers,Surgery can ensure the satisfactory outcome.
