Objective To summarize the clinical data and evaluate the hormone replacement treatment (HRT) in patients with premature ovarian failure (POF), explore the treatment of POF. Methods Forty patients with premature ovarian failure were evaluated from June 2006 to March 2008.HRT was used in 40 POF patients for 3~18 months and the changes of symptoms, transvaginal pelvic ultrasono graphy shows, serum hormon elevel, breast or liver or nephrectomy function pre- and post-HRT after stopping HRT were observed. Results Among 40 cases, the average period of amenorrhea was 2.5 years(from 6 months to 7 years), in which there were 3 cases with the abrupt cessation of menstruation and 37 patienta with oligomenonrrhea and gradually to cessation of menstruation.29 patients had the symptoms of estrogen deficiency and 62.5% of patients had genital and breast atrophy at different grades(Most of them appear to genital atrophy about more than 6 months). The circulating concentration of estradiol was reduced and follicle–stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone levels increased. Clinical symptoms in 40 patients were improved after HRT. The cure rate of premature ovarian failure was 7.5%.Compared with those before HRT, serum FSH and LH level decreased significantly (P<0.01, P<0.05).No change in the volume of ovary and uterus was observed. The thickeness of the endometrium was increased obviously (P<0.01).Serum cholesterol, triglyceride and low density lipoprotien decreased significantly (P<0.05) as much as low density lipoprotien increased(P<0.05).No damage of liver function and other side-effects were found during HRT. Conclusion Premature ovarian failure is a disease of multifactors, HRT can improve symptoms and decrease the level of serum FSH and LH.
