The plant Paederia scandens (Lour.) Merr. belongs to Paederia Linn of Rubiaceae. It has abroad dosage in Chinese medicine as popular herbal crude drugs. It has a lot of efficiencies such as promoting digestion, relieving cough, relieving pain etc. This dissertation summary the progress of the studies on the P. scandens (Lour.) Merr. at home and abroad, and research the resources of Paederia Linn plants in Zhejiang Province. Then determinate the volatile oil's components of these two plants'fruits, and have comparative study about effective componets (oleanolic acid and ursolic acid) of different harvesting sites on different harvesting season from P. scandens (Lour.) Merr. and P. scandens (Lour.) Merr. var. tomentosa (Bl.) Hand.-Mazz.. These studies can be foundation for the clinical application and follow-up study of this crude drug. The result showed:1. There are three species and one varieties Paederia Linn plants in Zhejiang province. Based on the flora's recordating and analysis on the specimens. We have main differentiated points of Paederia scandens (Lour.) Merr., Paederia scandens (Lour.) Merr. var. tomentosa (Bl.) Hand.-Mazz., Paederia cavaleriei Lévl. and Paederia laxiflora Merr.ex Li .2. Through extraction and determination of the volatile oil's components from the four spieces, we think that the volatile oil's content of fruits of P. scandens (Lour.) Merr. and P. scandens (Lour.) Merr. var. tomentosa (Bl.) Hand.-Mazz. are maximum and similar. The former is 2.9% and the latter is 3.2%. It is obvious that the fruits'contents is higher than vines'and leaves'. In addition, it has great difference from both fruits'components of volatile oil, 22 spieces (about 33 percent of all components) are the same components from them.3. Through extraction and HPLC analysis about oleanolic acid and ursolic acid, they are extracted from different harvesting sites on different harvesting season from P. scandens (Lour.) Merr. and P. scandens (Lour.) Merr. var. tomentosa (Bl.) Hand.-Mazz.. We master a method for extraction and determination of ursolic acid and oleanolic acid in P. scandens (Lour.) Merr. and P. scandens (Lour.) Merr. var. tomentosa (Bl.) Hand.-Mazz.. The contents of ursolic acid and oleanolic acid are related with growing season and sampling sites. We can conjecture that the content of ursolic acid and oleanolic acid is highest in October from their fruits.
