Objective:To evaluate the effects of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization(TACE) on patients with primary hepatic carcinoma at middle or advancedstages, and to discuss the influence factors on prognosis.Method:TACE was performed in 28 patients with moderate to advancedprimary hepatic carcinoma via femoral artery catheterization by Seldinger'stechnique. After TACE,we followed up the survival rate, tumor size, the seralAFP,the general condition and the hepatic function of the patients.Result:Most patients had improved general condition and clinicalsymptom,in result of better life quality.Twenty-five of the 28 patients hadreduced tumor size to various degree after TACE.Five patients had tumor sizereduced by more than 50%.Thirteen patients had their tumor reduced by25%~50%.Other 7 cases were with tumor size reduced by less than25%.Among the 20 patients with positive seral AFP,15 of them had AFPvalue reduced.Four of them had AFP turned to negative.Twenty-one patientsof the 28 cases died within 6 to 12 months.Among them, seven died of uppergastrointestinal hemorrhage, three died of hepatic function failure, and elevendied of metastasis of cancer.Eighteen cases survived more than half ayear, with survival rate of 64.3%.Eight cases survived more than 12 months, with the 1-year survival rate as about 34.8%.Conclusion:As a result, TACE is an effective treatment for patients withprimary hepatic cancer who have lost the operation chance but with relativelyoptimal condition.
