| [Objective] Hip fractures are common injuries in the elderly that can be associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. To study the tendency of the elderly hip fracture by analyzing etiological factor to provide an basis for preventing the fracture, and to provide basic theoretical criteria for clinic treatment.[Method and Material] All the patients with hip fracture werehospitalized in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of West China Hospital of Sichuan University from January 1st,1997 to October 30th,2006. And 825 inpatients were selected for retrospective analysis.[Result] Many factors, both genetic and environmental, are involved in the development of the elderly hip fracture, which the major injury cause was fall among the elderly, and female was more susceptible. Fall contributed best to the hip fracture in the elderly. And the internal medicine diseases, such as Osteoporosis,dementia,cerebrovascular accident and hemiplegia so on, or environmental factors increased the risk of hip fracture among the elderly.[Conclusion] Falls plays an very important role in resulting in the hip fracture in the elderly. Osteoporosis is a considerable one of the risks of the hip fracture in elderly. Accordingly, prevention of the hip fractures in the elderly could be accomplished by preventing fall or osteoporosis, or decreasing the impact of a fall on the hip by using hip protectors. |
