Huanglian(Coptis chinensis Franch.) is a crude drug which derived from Ranunculaceae. The officinal part is rhizoma. Huanglian is a famous traditional Chinese medicine. Tt has been used most frequently for its various pharmacological actions such as antifungal, anti-inflammation.Investigated and compared the tissue characters of C. chinensis Franch.,C. deltoidea C.Y.Wang et Hsiao,C.teeta Wall.,C. omeiensis (chen) C. Y. Cheng,C. japonica Makino and C. sp. We found some characters which can be used to identify them.Seven protoberine alkalodis were isolated and purified from rhizoma of Coptis chinensis Franch. The structures of these constituents were identified as follow::berberine, Coptisine, palmatine, jatrorrhizine, columbamine, epiberberine and groenlandicine. In the primary quality standard study of Huanglian, selecting seven protoberine alkalodis as study objects, determination method of protoberine alkalodis in Huanglian was developed by HPLC. A systematic quality evaluation of the samples from different towns in e' mei was established.Study of the effects of TA, berberine, coptisine on the experimental gastric ulcers. The experimental gastric damages were established by aqueous extract excitability ulcer in mice and protective effect of Coptisine given orally previously was observed. TA, berberine, coptisine showed significantly effect on gastric damages by aqueous extract excitability.
