Intraductal papillary mucinous tumor (IPMT)is an uncommon pancreatic mucinous cystic tumor with its distinctive characteristics. It is different to deal with the two types of IPMT clinically, also it's difficult to differentiate benign and malignant IPMT preoperatively. In this study,we conclude that there is significant difference between benign and malignant IPMT by summarize and analyze satistically forty patients with IPMT who were treated at Shanghai Changhai Hospital from 1996 to 2007 on clinical and imaging characteristics, which can help us differentiate benign and malignant IPMT preoperatively, thereby it can help surgeon to decide whether to operate immediately or which procedure of surgical resection should to do; we also find that the expression ofα6-containing integrin in malignant IPMT tumor cells is significantly stronger than benign cells by immunohistochemical analysis (Envision two steps) of the expression ofα6-containing integrin detected in benign and malignant IPMT tumor cells, respectively. It suggests thatα6-containing integrin maybe play an important role in in the development of IPMT malignancy change and invasive metastasis.
