Objective:To investigate the relationships among vascular risk factors, Alzheimer's disease(AD)and vascular dementia(VD).Methods:This study was conducted among the residents aged 50 years or over in the Baishi Bridge community in Urumqi,Changji city,Bo state,Yanqi county in Xinjiang province. Each examinee was asked for the age, nationality, date of birth, smoking history, drinking history and other general information.Their body height, body mass, abdominal circumference and blood pressure were measured. Moreover their blood glucose, serum cholesterol, triglyceride were detected in the blood of peripheral vein. Each elderly was interviewed faced to face with the Mini Mental State Examination(MMSE)to screen out one's who had cognitive impairment, and then assessed with a battery of neuropsycholgical tests. The clinical diagnosis on dementia was based upon the 3rd Edition of Diagnostic and Statistical of Manual of Mental Disorder,Revised version(DSM-Ⅲ-R).The National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke and the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association criteria(NINCDS-ADRDA)was used for the diagnoses of AD.VD was identified with the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and Association International pour la Recherche et l'Enseignement en Neurosciences criteria. Some vascular factors such as smoking history, drinking history, blood pressure, blood glucose, serum cholesterol, triglyceride, body mass index et al were detected in 186 cases with Alzheimer's disease,115 cases with Vascular Dementia, and 200 controls.Multivariate analysis was conducted in Logistic regression mode. Results:In multivariate analysis, the relationships among AD and smoking history, drinking history, blood pressure, serum cholesterol, triglyceride, body mass index were statistically insignificant(P>0.05),but blood pressure(OR=3.20,95%CI=1.19~5.79, P=0.000),blood glucose(OR=3.18,95%CI=1.51~6.54,P=0.002),triglyceride(OR=2.25, 95%CI= 1.24~4.09,P=0.008)were identified as risk factors of AD.As to VD,multivariate analysis showed that blood pressure(OR=3.19,95%CI= 2.25~6.65,P<0.001),cholesterol(OR=3.68,95%CI= 1.95~6.73,P<0.001),body mass index (OR=2.24,95%CI=1.24~5.74,P=0.002),triglyceride(OR=2.07,95%CI=1.02~2.82, P=0.015)were identified as risk factors of VD.Conclusion:Alzheimer's Disease seems to be related to blood glucose, illiteracy.Ventricular Dementia may be associated with blood pressure, blood glucose, education and body mass index.
