AimTo find the differences among hippocampal formation(HF),corpus callosum(CC),Lateral ventricles(LV),sulcus lateralis(SL) and leukoaraiosis (LA) of the patients with AD and VD in this research,we made test gridding based on the Cavalieri's theory of stereology.Then we quantitatively measured the volume of encephalic cavity (EC ),HF,CC,LV,SL and LA on the craniocerebral magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) of the patients with AD and VD.Then we constructed Fisher's linear discriminant functions with these indicators to improve veracity of differentiation AD,VD and normal contral(NC). Objects and methods Clinic research objectsGroups for comparison consisted of patients with AD(n=20) and VD(n=20). These patients were recruited from the Neurology Department,Zhujiang hospital of the First Military Medical University between 1998 and 2003.Assessments and diagnosis:All patients underwent Mini mental State Examination (MMSE) scores.The standardized MMSE scores were that illiteracy group(uneducated) =17,elementary school group(educated years 6 years)=20,high school or upwards group(educated years > 6 years) =24.The total scores of MMSE was 30.The scores of MMSE below the criteria was confirmed deficits of cognition,otherwise was normal.Other causes that can result in dementia and mixed dementias were-excluded.The scores of MMSE had no significant differences between the AD and VD groups.AD patients fulfilled NINCDS-ADRDA criteria for ' probable' AD and had a Hachinski Ischemic Score (HIS ) ^4.VD patients fulfilled NINDS/AIREN criteria VD and had a HIS> 7.All patients were diagnosed by two attending or chief physician majored in neurology..NC group was composed of 20 normal healthy elder without deficits of cognition.The scores of MMSE were normal according to the educated degrees. Methods Apparatus and equipmenta 1.5T MR scanner(1.5T Horizon,GE Signa)a read lamprulers and lucency films Experiment methods MRI scanning protocolAll scans were performed on a 1.5T MR scanner (GE Signa) .HF images were acquired by continuously craniocerebral scanning at 0.5cm thickness with flair MRI sequence. CC images were acquired by continuously craniocerebral scanning at 1cm thickness with sagittal TI-weighted MRI sequence.LV and SL images were acquired by continuously craniocerebral scanning at 1cm thickness with axial TI-weighted MRI sequence. LA images were acquired by continuously craniocerebral scanning at 1cm thickness with axial flair MRI sequence. Made test griddingFirst,draw interval vertical cross lines in a 10cm X 10cm paper according to cranial MRI unit length.Then copy the paper on a lucency film. So test gridding was made.Test gridding unit length was 0.5cm or Icm.The intersections of the test gridding was called measure points that represented for acreage.Here measure points was 0.25 cm2 or 1cm2.Calculate measure points(P) of the research object after pile up test gridding on the surface of cranial MRI.Volume of the object=a(P)X ZPxt, 'a(P)' represented formeasure points acreage,that was 0.25 cm2 or 1cm2. 'EP' was sum of measure points and V was layer thick. Images measureCalculate measure point on the axial MRITi-weighed images and sum up the points(P).According to the formula,we can get the EC volume.As the same way,volumes of CCJLV,SL,LA and HF were acquired.The standardized volume of CC mean amounted to volume of CC/EX lOOO.The severity degree of LA was expressed by scores.Two sides had no focus means 0,one to two means 1,three to five means 2,more than five means 3,amalgamation means 4.To reduce errors of measurements,all measurements were completed by two researchers and repeated two times.Data was mean of the measure results.
