BackgroundGlomus jugular tumor is a relatively low incidence tumor. Since 1945 when Rosenwasser described the first patient diagnosed with glomus jugulare tumor at the middle ear, Chinese and foreign literature continue reports of such cases but still there is a little coverage. According to the biological behavior jugular body tumor can be divided into two categories; functional and non-functional.According to the origin it can be divided into jugular body tumors and tumor ball. Jugular body tumor has numerous names, including paraganglioma, paraneuroganglioma and chemodectoma. The Cause still unclear, it was suggested that the genetics. Although the diagnostic techniques have improved to help clinicians make correct diagnosis, but early diagnosis is still difficult. According to the location and the depth, there are important local structures, anatomical complex relationships, and there are many problems with the treatment including surgical complications. So there are many issues that need further study and exploration for the clinician to provide more theoretical and technical support.Clinical data: On March 17, 2006 a patient presented with right ear purulent not stink effusion, accompanied by tinnitus, vertigo, facial paralysis and decreased hearing with no sever earache. Before four days, the right ear bleeding volume was more with normal blood pressure and heart rate. After hospitalization and surgical treatment the postoperative pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis as jugular body tumor. On January, 2007 the case was reported and published in journal of minimally invasive medicine 2007: vol. 2. Conclusion: Most scholars agreed on the naming as Glomus jugular tumors, but such name still have its limitations and unscientific aspects. First of all, such naming strictly depends on the anatomic location and do not fully reflect its biological characteristics. It also could not explain the origin. Second, such a name is confusing as tumors of Jacobson nerve has been referred to as a Glomus jugular tumor. Of course, to achieve the perfect name and reunification is not a simple matter. Diagnosis: as technology continues to improve diagnosis, diagnosis is not easy, but early diagnosis is still difficult. As late treatment provokes a lot of problems, early diagnosis is particularly important and significant. This requires clinicians to improve awareness of the disease. Surgical treatment alone or in addition to radiotherapy is still the choice, arterial thrombosis and Gamma Knife also has been used.
