Objective:β-catenin is a type of proto-oncogene, coded by CTNNB1. Although the roles ofβ-catenin in carcinogenesis of many diseases have been evaluated, the role of it in oral squamous cell carcinoma remains poorly understood. The aim of this Study is to examine the expression ofβ-catenin and its relative factors in oral squamous cell carcinoma and analyze the relations of them using the method of immunohistochemistry. Methods: The examined materials which were from stomatology hospital oral pathology department of Tianjin medical university included specimens of 50 cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma, 10 cases of epithelial dysplasia in oral membrane. They were analyzed immunohistochemically to assessα-catenin,β-catenin , ki-67, E-cadherin and Laminin. Then, by the results we evaluated the role of these markers in oral squamous cell carcinoma. Results:Part 1: The expressions ofα-catenin,β-catenin and E-cadherin in normal oral membrane, epithelial dysplasia and oral squamous cell carcinoma have been studied. The results implied thatβ-catenin played an important role in the cell adhesion. Part 2: The expressions ofβ-catenin and Laminin in normal oral membrane, epithelial dysplasia and oral squamous cell carcinoma have been studied. The results implied thatβ -catenin played an important role in the cell infiltration. Part 3: The expressions ofβ-catenin and ki-67 in normal oral membrane, epithelial dysplasia and oral squamous cell carcinoma have been studied. The results implied that in the cell proliferation of oral squamous cell carcinoma,β-catenin was not an important agent. Conclusion: The results of this research implied thatβ-catenin played an important role in cell adhesion and infiltration in oral squamous cell carcinoma, while not in cell proliferation.
