Investigation and analysis of nursing workload with NAS in ICUObjectiveTo translate the Nursing activities score into Chinese version then evaluate the validity, reliability and cultural of Nursing activities score (NAS) as an effective assessment instrument in Chinese version. Apply the NAS in our ICU and evaluate its results. Analysis the character of ICU workload, provide data for nursing administer to reveal the characteristic of workload in ICU.Materials and MethodsBased on essential elements from the time needed for care, the original inventory was established by reviewing the literature to determine the tool to be translated and obtain Dr Miranda's (the original author) permission. A bilingual English researcher translates the original scale into Chinese version. Then, the Chinese version being translated back into English by another translator. Finally, a professional bilingual expert comparts the Chinese version scale with the original in detail. The culture relevance, language equivalency and content validity of the Chinese version of the NAS (CNAS) were evaluated by panel of experts. It is formed by 23 entries. Choice the workload of ICU 2006.1~4. During those three months CNAS was systematically applied to all the patients admitted to the ICU of The first hospital of Chinese medical university. Total 126 persons' nursing workload (with 116 improve case and 10 deaths) had being assessment by Nursing Activities Score every day. All the quantitative data of the questionnaire survey was analyzed by SPSS 12.0 for testing the reliability and validity of the scale. The statistical analysis methods including the internal consistency, the scorer reliability, correlation analysis et al. Results1,Reliability of the scaleAll items have better reacted to the culture, one item was modified of the Chinese version. CNAS had acceptable internal consistency (Cronbach'αwas 0.94 for the scale) and the Scorer Reliability (0.997).2,Validity of the scaleThe content validity index for Chinese version NAS is 0.95. The correlation analysis indicated that the structure of the scale was execellent. Each factor relates to total NAS score is from 0.3 to 0.90.3,ICU nursing workload(1) The NAS score of each patient is 67.83±13.23. In general a nurse could nurse care 1.5 patients.(2) The implication of hospitalizations and nursing workload. That is different between the firstday, second day and the last day.(3) Nursing workload is significant difference with the patients'disparity turnover.(4) The patients with different disease had the same nursing workload.ConclusionsChinese version NAS is a valid and reliable tool to assess nursing workload in ICU. It provide a reliable theoretical basis and supporting data for nursing administrators. The nurse's workload was different with the period they stay in the ICU and the result of them. The reason that they admitting wouldn't change the workload.
