Objective To observe the choleretic,hemostatic,diuretic,sedation effect of Stigma Maydis Polysaccharide(SMPS);To study mechanisms of SMPS on weight loss in experimental animals;To study the effect on inflammatory mode. Methods Biliary duct cannula bile after intraduodenal administration in rats was collected and counted to observe the effect of SMPS on biliary secretion ; the weight of cholecyst in mice was counted to observe the effect of SMPS on the cholecyst of mice ; Bleeding time (BT),coagulation time (CT),recalcification time(RT) were measured in mice by means of tail cutting,glass slide,recalcification method in mice ; platelet count,the prothrombin time(PT),the active partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and fibrinogen (FIB) were measured by means of blood coagulation analyzer on rats ;the effect of SMPS on abdomen capillary permeability was observed on the model of abdomen capillary per-meability induced by actetic acid in mice; to investigate the hemostatic effect on gastric hemorrhage model caused by heat;to observe changes of body weight,appetite of rats;taking charcoal as the indicator and taking ratio of charcoal movement,beginning time of black excretion and stool amount as the index to observe the effect of SMPS on intestinal movement in mice;taking emthylorange as the indicator and taking the ratio of residual rate of methylorange as the index to observe the effect of SMPS on gastric emptying in mice.Taking methylene blue as the indicator and taking the time of gastric emptying and movement speed of intestinal content as the index to observe the effect of SMPS on gastrointestinal movement in rats. Inflammatory effect of SMPS from corn silk was observed on the models of dimethyl benzene-induced auricular swelling in mice,celiac capillary permeability in mice, chemotaxis of WBC induced by CMC-Na in mice and hind paw edema induced by fresh egg white in rats after being administrated with SMPS and being intraperitoneally administered with Glycoproteins from corn silk. The urinary output of the loading rats and mice with NS and the contents of Na+,K+,Cl- in the rats'urine was tested. The effects of SMPS on spontaneous activities in mice was observed by applying the method of the walking time and the frequence of its raising forelimb and YSD-4G apparatus;the synergetic effects of SMPS on amobarbital sodium was observed by applying the method of sleeping-time extention. the acute toxic test of SMPS was done with mice. Results SMPS could significantly increase the biliary secretion;SMPS could decrease the weight of cholecyst in normal mice and gastric hemorrhage model caused by heat; SMPS shortened BT,CT,RT in mice and shortened APTT in normal rats and gastric hemorrhage model caused by heat.SMPS increased the count of Plt,decreased bleedings on gastric hemorrhage model,and had no effect on PT,FIB,increased abdomen capillary permeability.SMPS inhibited appetite,decreased body weight. SMPS increased the ratio of charcoal movement increased in mice; SMPS shortened the beginning time of black excretion and increased the stool amount in mice; increased the ratio of residual rate of methylorange in mice; prolonged the time of gastric emptying in rats; accelerated the movement speed of intestinal content in rats.SMPS increased the acute inflammation induced by egg-albumin and xylene,increased the celiac capillary permeability,increased chemotaxis of leucocyte induced by CMC-Na,but the effects were not very significant.SMPS significantly increased the urinary output of the loading rats and mice with NS and the contents of K+,Cl-,Na+ in the rats'urine .SMPS reduced mice's spontaneous activities and had the cooperation function with amobarbital sodium. The acute toxic test showed that the acute toxicity of SMPS was too low to measure LD50. Conclusion SMPS showes considerable choleretic,hemostatic,diuretic,abirritative and weight loss effect.SMPS promotes early,middle inflammation.Its hemostatic mechanism is related to increasing platelet count,activating endogenous coagulatian system function. The mechanisms of weight loss are probably related to prolonging of gastric emptying,appetite inhibition, accelerating of intestinal peristalsis,the quantity increasing of dejecta.
