Objective The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the outcome of in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer in women with endometriosis and a control group. Methods A retrospective study was carried out in Reproductive Health Centre of 1st affiliated hospital of Zhengzhou University, Henan, China. Study was carried out in all the patients of endometriosis who has undergone IVF for management of infertility from the year 2000 to 2005 & compared with control group from the same duration of year & age. Total 60 cases were enrolled in the study. Downregulation was done with GnRH Agonist from 21st day of previous cycle followed by COH with Gonadotropins 3rd or 4th day onward till the leading follicle reach more than 18 mm diameter. Ovulation triggered by injection human chorionic gonadotrophin and all cases underwent IVF-ET at the interval of 34 - 36 hrs of hCG injection. Luteal support was given by progesterone injection 80mg since the day of the ET. Qualitative hCG for pregnancy test was performed on D14 of IVF-ET to determine the establishment of biochemical pregnancy. These groups were retrospectively analyzed regarding stimulation, fertilization, embryo development, implantation, and pregnancy outcome. Results Our study shows the pregnancy rate following IVF is 40% (12 cases), non pregnant rate 60% (18 cases), abortion ratel6.66% (2 cases), whereas in control group the pregnancy rate 53.33% (16 cases), non pregnant rate 46.66% (14 cases), abortion rate 25% (4 cases). This study shows that there is no significant difference in pregnancy outcome between endometriosis & control group (P > 0.05).Conclusion Our results show that IVF is very effective treatment in managing infertility due to Endometriosis without any other added cause of infertility in both male and female partners and is also very effective treatment in managing infertility due to other causes. After failed IVF-ET, Thaw-ET is proposed to the patients to increase the pregnancy rate. However, many aspects of treatment that could optimize the rate of success remain to be defined.
