To test the accuracy and precision of ALA measurements of differentsize pulmonary nodules. To evaluate the reliability of the ALA softwaremeasurements of VDT (volume doubling time). To investigate the value ofALA measurements of small pulmonary nodules to assess growth andmalignancy status. To determine the interval between follow-upexaminations for patients. Five soft tissue nodules were made accordingto different volumes: group A (diameter 5mm),group B(diameter 7mm), groupC (diameter 10mm), group D(diameter 15mm), group E(diameter 21mm). Anothertwo Group C1(579mm3) and Group C2 (645mm3) were made according to thetheoretical volume of the nodule of group C (VDT=180) growing to theend of the forth or eighth weeks. The same scan parameters were usedthroughout the experiment. Every nodule was scanned five times both inand out of the rabbits body. The volume of each nodule and the VDT of groupC1 and C2 were calculated by the ALA software. The results show A highaccuracy and that the error of measurement decreased with the increaseof volume of the nodule. ALA software provided an accurate andreproducible volume measurement in the out of body nodules. The accuracyof ALA measurements in the body is below that of the out of body group.Pleural and other tissue close to the nodule have great effects on themeasure results. The measure volume in body has a tendency to increase.ALA software is sensitive to the growth of the nodule out of the body andThe measurement results of VDT is accurate and precise. But for theinternal nodules, pleural and other tissue close to the nodule havinggreat effects on the measure results. The accuracy and precisiondecreased. Due to the extreme rate of error the ALA technology needsfurther improving.
