The prognosis indicator of breast cancer is a traditional studying subject. We have acknowledged the clinical progress and physical activity of breast cancer much better, and we could put it into clinical activities. Though several detecting projects had been studied and plenty of works had been published for a long period, few had put into conventional detecting proceedings. The aim of this study is to discuss the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) between breast cancer tissue and normal epithelial tissue, and the relationship between COX-2 and the prognosis of the breast cancer.Material and Methods: Archival primary breast cancer(n=98), adjacent normal epithelial tissue (n=20) were analyzed for COX-2 expressions by immunohistochemical method using specific monoclonal antibodies. All species, be gotten from NO. 1 Hospital of Jilin University, form January 2000 to June 2002, had intact follow-up information. And all species are identified by pathologist. Non-infiltrative carcinoma got 3 species, early-infiltrative carcinoma 2, infiltrative special carcinoma 3, and non-specific infiltrative carcinoma 90. Among the all, we got intraductal carcinoma 2cases, lobular carcinoma in situ 2cases, early infiltration of duct carcinoma 2 cases, simple carcinoma 36 cases, infiltrative duct carcinoma 27 cases, medullary carcinoma 17 cases, scirrhous carcinoma 2 cases, infiltrative loburlar carcinoma 2 cases, cribriform carcinoma 1 case, adenocarcinoma 3 cases, else 5cases. All patients are female, and average age is 47.7 years old. According to TNM staging system, we got stage I 22 species, stage II 66 species, stage III 8 species, stage IV 1species. Also we got normal breast tissue 20 species which adjacent to breast cancer tissue. Results: The expression of COX-2 in breast cancer and normal epithelial tissue has significant difference in statistics(P<0.05). A significant correlation was found between the survival period and pathological stage, estrogen receptor positive and P185 positive (P<0.05, RR=16.619,0.377,2.952 respectively). The five-year-survival rate of COX-2 positive expression is 80.9%, and 93.3% for negative expression (Log-Rank test, P=0.34).Conclusion: The overexpression of cyclooxygenase-2 involved in the whole nature course of carcinogenesis of breast cancer, and have no statistical difference with the survival rate of the patients with breast cancer. As we concluded, the express COX-2 has no relationship with the prognosis of the patients with breast cancer, and couldn't be taken as an independent prognosis factor yet.
