Objective To study the feature of main death cause, and the disease burden of inhabitants in Xihu district of Hangzhou. Methods The mortality data of inhabitants in Xihu district of Hangzhou during the period of 2002-2005 were reviewed. Statistical parameters including crude mortality, standardized mortality, potential year of life loss (PYLL), standardized potential year of life loss (SPYLL), working years of potential life lost (WYPLL), Years of life lost (YLL) with premature death, and disease indirect economic burden due to premature death were analyzed with the aim to evaluate the disease burden of different causes of death.Results1. The average annual crude mortality of all causes of death of inhabitants in Xihu district of Hangzhou during the years was 361.53/100 000, and the average annual standardized mortality was 235.83/100 000. The potential year of life loss (PYLL) of all causes of death was 37421 person year, corresponding standardized potential year of life loss (SPYLL) was 36950 person year with a SPYLL rate of 18.49‰. The working years of potential life lost (WYPLL) of all causes of death was 27069 person year, with a WYPLL rate of 14.05‰. The Years of life lost (YLL) of all causes of death was 59403 person year, with corresponding YLL of 27.84 per thousand person. The average annual disease indirect economic burden due to premature death was up to 205 million Chinese Yuan (RMB).Regarding to the disease burden parameters, the top four death causes were malignancy, poisonings and injuries, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease.2. The average annual crude mortality of malignancy of inhabitants in Xihu district of Hangzhou during the years was 100.86/100 000, and the average annual standardized mortality was 70.42/100 000. The potential year of life loss (PYLL) of malignancy was 16219 person year, corresponding standardized potential year of life loss (SPYLL) was 14320 person year with a SPYLL rate of 7.17‰. The working years of potential life lost (WYPLL) of malignancy was 11359 person year, with a WYPLL rate of 5.89‰. The Years of life lost (YLL) of malignancy was 22504 personyear, with corresponding YLL of 10.55 per thousand person. The average annual indirect economic burden due to premature death of malignancy was up to 90 million Chinese Yuan (RMB).Regarding to the disease burden parameters, the top five tumors were lung cancer, hepatic neoplasm, gastric cancer, leukemia, and colorectal cancer.3. The average annual crude mortality of accidental injury among inhabitants in Xihu district of Hangzhou during the years was 23.76/100 000, and the average annual standardized mortality was 20.56/100 000. The potential year of life loss (PYLL) of accidental injury was 9850 person year, corresponding standardized potential year of life loss (SPYLL) was 10910 person year with a SPYLL rate of 5.46 ‰. The working years of potential life lost (WYPLL) of accidental injury was 8085 person year, with a WYPLL rate of 4.20‰. The Years of life lost (YLL) of accidental injury was 8870 person year, with corresponding YLL of 4.16 per thousand person. The average annual indirect economic burden due to premature death of accidental injury was up to 47 million Chinese Yuan (RMB).Regarding to the disease burden parameters, the top four causes of accidental injury were traffic accident, drowning, suicide and falling. Conclusion Taking all the disease burden parameters into consideration, malignancy, poisonings and injuries, cardiovascular disease, as well as respiratory disease were the main death causes of inhabitants in Xihu district of Hangzhou. Lung cancer, hepatic neoplasm, gastric cancer, leukemia, and colorectal cancer were among the most common tumors; and traffic accident, drowning, suicide and falling were the most common causes of accidental injury. Prevention and control measures should be strengthened.
