Objective: To investigate the etiology , clinical features of chronic renal failure (CRF) in the elderly. We hope it can provide more information on the diagnosis and treatment strategy of CRF.Methods: The retrospective analysis included 125 aged CRF patients hospitalized in the First Hospital of Ji Lin University and the 208th Hospital of P.L.A. Data on the etiology , clinical characteristics and medication of these patients were examined. Results: They were 69 males and 56 females with mean age (67.3±6.8) years old. As the leading cause , chronic glomerulonehritis accounted for 37.6% , followed by hypertension nephropathy (22.4%) ,and diabetic nephropathy (19.2%) . The symptoms of elderly CRF were complicated and were related to many systems. The inception rate of hypertension was 76.8% . There was no significant deviation of hypertension's inception rate among different periods and different origins of elderly CRF. With the renal function getting worse , the incidence rate of anemia was increasing and the degree was aggravating . The features of lipid metabolic disorder of elderly patients with CRF were hypertriglyceridemia and olig-HDL-C-emia. There were 28.8% patients suffered from congestive heart failure (CHF) .Pulmonary infection was the most frequent to elderly CRF complicatinginfection . United medication prevails to cure hypertension in elderly CRF. The highest applied frequency of hypotension drug was CCB . The applied frequency of ACEI and ARB were lower. The treatment of hypertension in the patients with HD was more difficult than the patients with nondialysis. The applied frequency of EPO was lower in the treatment of anemia. The most patients who were indicated to substitutive therapy were not treated with it . The main causes of death in the elderly CRF patients were CHF(42.1%) and serious infection(21.1%).Conclusions: Chronic glomerulonehritis was the first cause of elderly CRF. The prevalence of hypertension nephropathy and diabetic nephropathy increased. The symptoms of elderly CRF were non-specific and the onset was insidious . The inception rates of hypertension and anemia were high ,and the therapeutic effect was not satisfied . The main causes of death in the elderly CRF patients were CHF and serious infection.
