Objective: To study the therapeutic effect of UPPP in treating mixed sleep apnea syndrome. Methods: Ten patients of mixed sleep apnea syndrome were selected in the research. All the ten cases were examined by polysomnogram (PSG) before and after the uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP). The follow-up time after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty was between 6-51 months, average time was 20.3 months. The data were analyzed by the statistics methods. Results: Before UPPP, the AHI of 9 cases were severe degree while 1 case was mild degree. After UPPP, the AHI of 5 cases were severe degree , 1 case was moderate degree , 4 cases were mild degree. The total therapeutic effect after UPPP: 4 cases were excellent. 2 cases were effective.4 cases were useless. The frequency and duration of central sleep apnea after UPPP was obviously lower than before the UPPP(P<0.01).Conclusions: The uvulopalatopharyngoplasty could obviously decrease the frequency and duration of central sleep apnea (P<0.01), so it is beneficial to restore the function of the respiration centre. The uvulopalatopharyngoplasty can decrease apnea /hypopnea index and improve saturation of blood oxygen of most patients of mixed sleep apnea syndrome. So this operation can be applied to the treatment of mixed sleep apnea syndrome.
