Objects: To observe the significance of throat swab cultures in children with acute tonsillitis.Methods: Throat swab cultures were performed from 164 hospitalized children with acute tonsillitis, 18 outpatients with acute tonsillitis, 416 hospitalized children with non-tonsillitis inflammatory disease and 30 healthy children.Results: (1) Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci was not found in hositalized children and outpatients with acute tonsillitis; (2) The positive rates of bacterial pathogens were similar in both hospitalized children with acute tonsillitis and with non-tonsillitis inflammatory disease(P>0.05); (3) The positive rates of Hemophilus parainfluenzae and Moraxelle catarrhalis were as follows in order: healthy children>outpatients with acute tonsillitis >hospitalized children with acute tonsillitis; (4) The positive rates of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Hemophilus influenzae in hospitalized children with acute tonsillitis were lower than in healthy children(P<0.05); (5) The positive rates of Candida in hospitalized chidren with acute tonsillitis were similar in both hospitalized children...
