Objective To study the effect of acupuncture on the healing of fractured bone in rats and the mechanism in this process. Method Fracture model was made at the right shinbone in rats. The rats were given electro-acupuncture onYanglingquan (GB34) and Xuanzhong (GB39) in experimental group and on relatively less related acupoints in acupuncture control group. The area of fibrous callus, cartilage, bone callus was quantitatively analysed using Image Pro Plus, a medical image system with histological method. MDA, SOD in rat serum and blood rheological change were observed also. The expression of transforming growth factorβ1 (TGF-β1) in the different stage in callus was studied with immuno-histological method. Result The area of fiberous callus was decreased and the area of osseous callus was increase in acupuncture group, which implied that acupuncture could promote the healing of bone fracture. The SOD increased, and the viscosity of blood and blood plasma reduced, the expression of TGF-β1 upregulated in acupuncture group. Conclusion Acupuncture could promote bone fracture healing. The mechanism is close related with that acupuncture can induce the TGF-β1 expression, and improve blood rheological condition.
