Background: Osteoporosis is a disease condition of bone which occurs due to decrease in bony matrix and calcium, that might result in fragility fractures with very little trauma. It is more common in postmenopausal females. It has very high fatality rate and morbidity. It influence the health and living quality of middle-aged and old-aged people severely. It is documented that the level of serum calcitonin has a distinguished decrease in the postmenopausal females, which probably is related to the osteoporosis occurrence.Calcitonin is a strongly suppressive agent of bone resorption of osteoclasts. It not only promote the multiplication and osteogenesis function of osteoblasts, but also possesses analgesic effect. These characters make calcitonin have an especial advantage in the treatment of osteoporosis.At present, the resources of clinical practical calcitonin are salmon and eel calcitonin by chemical synthesis.
