Objective :To evaluate the severity of C cell injury and the changes of serum calcitonin levels and calcitonin reserve function in rats after exposing to different doses of (131)~I . Methods: Thirty Sprague-dawley(SD) rats were randomly divided into control group, low-dose group, high-dose group. And their serum calcitonin levels and calcitonin reserve function were measured before and a month after receiving (131)~I. Then all rats were sacrificed, their thyroids were exised and HE staining and CT immunohistochemical staining were done. Results: Before receiving (131)~I, the CT basal values of control group, low-dose group and high-dose group were 149.58±49.04, 158.76±38.52 and 167.14±41.58. After calcium load, the mean values of peak serum calcitonin were 356.67±122.87,322.00±94.96 and 350.31±81.24, while the mean crease range was 207.09±78.40,163.24±59.40 and 183.17±48.79, respectively. Among them there was no significant difference. One month after receiving (131)~I, the CT basal value of the control group was 161.70±34.99, after calcium load the mean value of peak serum calcitonin and the mean crease range were 350.57±100.95 and 188.87±89.21, which showed no significant difference compared with that before receiving (131)~I ( P values were0.434,0.534 and 0.159) . However, the CT basal value of the low-dose group was 105.68±30.32, after calcium load the mean value of peak serum calcitonin and the mean crease range were 156.26±39.85 and 50.58±16.47, which showed significant difference compared with premedication. The CT basal value of the high-dose group was 57.52±8.40, after calcium load the mean value of peak serum calcitonin and the mean increase range were 77.740±11.55 and 20. 22±6.65, which also showed significant difference compared with premedication.( P values were 0.00,0.00 and 0.00) According to the results of CT Immunohistoche- mical staining, the C cell numbers and the density of C cells significantly reduced in rats'thyroids after receiving (131)~I. Conclusions : After receiving (131)~I radiation, the level of serum calcitonin, the peak serum calcitonin and crease range of the calcium load-release test were reduced, the extent of the decrease was related to the dose of (131)~I. Objective: To study the changes of the serum calcitonin level and calcitonin reserve capacity on patients with hypothyroidism after (131)~I therapy. Methods: The subjects which were singled out in my treatment were divided into groups by gender and time of hypothyroidism-occurrence. These patients were at the age of 21-40 years of hyperthyroidism concurrented hypothyroidism after the treatment by (131)~I and of thyroid cancer treated by(131)~I. Some normal at the age of 21-40 years were taken as the control group. Then the serum calcitonin levels and calcitonin reserve function of each group were measured. Results: In the group of women with early-onset hypothyroidism the CT basal value was 9.57±5.15, the mean value of peak calcitonin was14.79±7.70, the mean value of the creased range was 5.22±3.14,were with significant difference compared to the control group (P= 0.00, 0.00 , 0.00 ) and with no significant difference compared to the late-onset group. In the thyroid cancer group, there was significant difference compared to the control group in the CT basal value, the mean value of peak calcitonin and the mean creased range (P= 0.00, 0.00, 0.00). In the group of men with hypothyroidism the CT basal value was 11.10±10.82, the mean value of peak calcitonin was 15.01±12.00, the mean value of the increased range was 3.90±1.76,were with significant difference compared to the control group (P= 0.00). Conclusions: The serum calcitonin levels and calcitonin reserve function were decreased in patients of hypothyroidism after (131)~I therapy.
