Background: Depression is a syndrome mainly characterized by feelings of lasting dejection and hopelessness. Modern medicine thinks that depression belongs to mood disorders or depressive phase, and is an epidemic disease widely existing in the world and key factors resulting in suicides. Chinese medicine calls it as a generic designation to diseases caused by conditions of being depressed and Qi stagnation. Traditional anti-depression medicines include monoamine oxidase inhibitor, tricyclic anti-depressants and tetracylic anti-depressants in the sequence of time found, but they are limited in clinical applications for their serious side effects; the third-generation anti-depressants reach 80% of curative effects, but they are still serious in side effects, expensive and noneffective to part of patients, etc. Therefore, medical industry is required to find out effective ingredients in Chinese herbal medicines (plant medicines) to cure the said disease. Lasting depression, excessive thoughts and insufficient blood in heart or liver can lead to blood losses of five internal organs (including spleen, lung and kidney), easily getting excited and trance. The Five Intents in traditional Chinese medicine is a comprehensive summarization to all kinds of reasons for physiological diseases in mental system, therefore the authentication of depression should be directed by theory of five internal organs to identify the conditions of Qi and blood in corresponding organs.
