Objective: To study the deformity condition in patients with cleft Lip and/or palate in Fu meng county of Fu xin city, further analyze certain morbific factors, as well as furnish evidence for treatment and prevention to cleft lip and/or palate. Methods: From Jan 1997 to Dec 2004 the birth investigate was carried out in twelve monitoring areas in Fu meng county and the cases was statistically analyzed retrospectively. 32 CLP mothers and 128 normal mothers were studied in a case–control study. The investigation included the genetic factors and the risk factors in mother themselves and surroundings. Conditional stepwise Logistic model to simple factor and multivariate analysis was used. Results: Thirty-two cleft lip and/or palate babies were identified(22 males,10 females)among 29327 newborns in eight years. The total incidence is reported as 1.09 per 1000 live births(1 in 917).The cleft morphology was classified as follows: cleft lip in 17 cases(13 males,4 females),cleft lip and palate in 11 cases(8 males,3 females),cleft palate in 4 cases(1 male,3 females). Fifty-three percent of clefts affected the lip, 34 percent affected the lip and palate, and the remaining 13 percent was cleft palate. The incidence was 5.8 10 000 for cleft lip, 3.8 10 000 for cleft lip and palate and 1.4 10 000 for cleft palate. Unilateral clefts were more significantly predominant as compared with bilateral ones (5.4:1) and the incidence of left side cleft was slightly higher than that of the right...
