Objective To investigate the incidence of cleft lip&palate in recent ten years and analyze the risk factors. Methods A retrospective study was conducted by collecting the clinical data of 4758 cleft lip&palate patients in Stomatology Hospital affiliated to Wu Han University from Jan 1994 to Dec 2003. Data included the patient's diagnosis, age, gender , family history and maternal exposures in the trimester of pregnancy et al. These data were analyzed statistically by SPSS 11.0 software bag, the x~2 test were used to compare with the monitor marks. (p≤0.05 was considered significant). Meanwhile the data of 508 infants and their mothers hospitalized in 2003 were compared with the counterpart of 134 infants and their mothers of the Hu Bei General Hospital as the case-control study, a logistic regression model of simple factor and multivariateanalysis was used. Results Cleft lip(CL):931cases (19.57%), Cleft lip with palate(CL + P):2743cases (57.65%), Cleft palate only(CPO):1084 cases (22.78%).The ratio of males and females is 2.37:1. Males of cleft lip with or without palate are more than females; males of incomplete cleft palate and soft cleft palate are lower than females, the difference is significant (p<0.05). 364cases (7.65%) have the family history, the first generation relatives 207cases(4.35%), the second generation relatives 84cases(1.77%), the third generation relatives 73cases(1.53%). Mother suffer from diseases in the first three months of pregnancy: 941 cases (19.78%); 498 cases(10.47%) take drugs. There is no significant difference of the incidence between previous five years and last five years (p>0.05) . In the multiple logistic regression model, the family history and mother's occupation are involved in cleft lip with or without palate (CL±P); the infant's height and mother's occupation are involved in CPO.Conclusion The incidence of the cleft lip&palate is relevant with the hereditary factor and environment factors .There is no significant variation in the trend of cleft lip&palate in recent ten years.
