Hemangioma is a benign vascular lesion and is the most common tumor of infancy. The natural history of hemangiomas is characterized by three phases of development: the proliferative phase, the involuting phase and the involuted phase. Many of the lesions might regress spontaneously, but some need treatment to avoid various complications. In this study, we made a retrospective analysis about the curative effect and safety of superficial X-ray in the treatment of hemangioma. In order to seek the objective index to evaluate the curative effect, we also determined thechanges of the urinary basic fibroblast growth factor ( bFGF) in the patients beforeand after the treatment.Chapter 1 Treatment of mucocutaneous hemangioma with low-dose superficial X-ray irradiationObjctive To evaluate the efficacy and side effects of superficial X-ray irradiation in the treatment of mucocutaneous hemangioma. Methods The patients were treated with superficial X-ray machines (Dermopan and KX-10) at voltages of29kV, 43kV, 80kV, 100kV and 0~1mm aluminium filter board according to the depth and local anatomy characteristic of angioma, mostly one time per week, 1 ~2 Gy pertime, with the average total doses of 3~6 Gy. Results Eight hundred and sixty sixpatients were enrolled into the study and followed up for 2-10 years. The complete response and excellent response were observed among 822 of 866(94.9%) and 27 of 866(3.7%). The improvement rate and the ineffective rate were 1.6% and 0.4% respectively. Side effect included hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation (17 patients) and skin atrophy (8 patients). Conclusion Low-dose superficial X-ray can be used in the treatment of mucocutaneous hemangioma effectively and safely.Chapter 2 Determination of bFGF levels in the urine of infantile mucocutaneous hemangiomaObjective To determine the changes of urine levels of bFGF in the development of cutaneous hemangioma. Methods ELISA (enzyme-linked...
