The ferrule effect indicates a protective function that the ferrule provides to resist stresses such as functional lever forces, the wedging effect of tapered posts and the lateral forces exerted during the post insertion. Many scholars have investigated and confirmed the ferrule effect on the single-canalled teeth such as incisor and canine in vitro. As a result, they recommend design of ferrule for single-canalled anterior teeth as a effective means to prevent root fracture. However, there are few published studies analyzing the ferrule effect on multi-canalled posterior teeth, and posterior teeth differ from anterior teeth not only in anatomic structure but also in the occlusal force. This research studies the ferrule effect on double-canalled maxillary first premolar to test the hypothesis that the design of ferrule is beneficial to double-canalled teeth restored with cast post and core and metal crown, through three-dimensional finite element analysis.A three—dimensional finite element model of human maxillary first premolar was constructed by means of SCT scanning , image processing software and finite element analyzing program.
