Now malnutrition and over-nutrition has become a double challenge in the world. The problem is also existed in china according to National Survey of Nutrition and Health in China in 2002. The unreasonable dietary pattern and increasing quickly chronic diseases are common in the residents in the urban area while malnutrition continues occurring. The relationship between nutrition and non-communicable chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity has been affirmed again in this national survey. Nutrition education is very important to guide people's good dietary practice and healthy lifestyle for preventing and controlling chronic diseases. Relation between the residents and general professionals from community health service centers(CHSC) is more closed and friendly. The residents are easy to get and accept nutrition education from CHSC. Recently more and more patients in chronic disease go to CHSC rather than big hospitals so the requirement of nutrition education in the urban community is rapidly increased.However few researches on nutrition education have been reported in the city of China up to the present. Effect of the nutrition education program was limited in changing people's dietary practice, and also it have not been continued and developed. So it is urgent to study the need, means and pattern of nutrition education in Chinese urban community.This study was aimed to evaluate the nutrition status and need of target population in the urban community and to identify the effect of nutrition education card (NE-card) on nutrition education for 6 months in the community.
