Sunflower belongs to the family of Helianthus annuus L,The chemical constituents in the aerial parts of Sunflower have been investigated by many scholar,but less researches was carried out on the root of sunflower. In these paper, the chemical constituents in the root of sunflower were studied further, the progress in chemical compositions and pharmacological research were overviewed.On the base of formerly studies, the dry root power of sunflower was extracted by means of solvent method , the part of petrol extracted was isolated by silicagel colum chromatography,C18 opposite phase colum chromatography,recrystal etc. Three compounds were obtained ,their structures were identified on the analysis of their spectral data(MS,1H NMR,13C NMR,). H-1 and H-2 were identified as (2S,3S,4R)-1-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl- 2-N[(R)-2'-hydroxy-sixteen carbon acyl]-1,3,4-trihydroxyl-2-amido-egihteen alkyl and (2S, 3S,4R)-1-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-2-N[(R)-2'-hydroxy-sixteen carbon acyl]-1,3,4-trihydroxyl- 2-amido-16-methyl seventeen alkyl. The compounds are all isolated from Helianthus annuus L. firstly.The trial about the resist senile dementia was carried out with PC12 cell cultured by NGF, results showed H-1 and H-2 have not obvious effects on promoting NGF growth activity and reducing cell death.
