| Desmodii Herba, the whole plants of Desmodium styracifolium (Osb.) Merr. (Leguminosae), has been used as aspecific medicine to treat cholestylithiasis or urolithiasis in southern China.Fourteen compounds were separeated from the the whole plants of D. styracifolium (Osb.) Merr. by various chromatographic methods, such as silica gel, macroporous resin, sephadex LH-20, polyamide, ODS, PTLC and so on.On the basis of physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic analysis, fourteen compounds were identified as: (3α,4β,5α)-dihydro-4,5-dimethyl-3-(1-pyrrolyl)-furan -2(3H)-one (1), phthalic acid bis-(2-ethyl-hexyl) ester (2), apigenin 8-C-β-L -arabinopyranoside (3), apigenin 8-C-a-L-arabinopyranoside (4), schaftoside(5), isovitexin (6), isoorientin (7), luteolin (8), salicylic acid (9), vanillic acid (10), ferulic acid (11), 3,4-Dimethoxy-phenol (12), vanillin (13), oxalic acid (14).Among them, compound 3 was a new compound, compound 1 was a new natural compound, 2, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 were isolated from this plant for the first time.A review on the spectroscopic character of flavone C-glycoside was summarized based on the spectral data of the related references.The experiments in vitro showed that the extracts of D. styracifolium (Osb.) Merr. had obvious inhibitory activities on the synthesis and release of NO, which was induced by LPS in macrophage cells of mice abdominal cavity, and indicated the extracts had the anti -inflammatory effect.
