QN capsule was composed of Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Rhizoma Chuanxiong, Radix Rehmannia Preparata, Cassia obtusifolia L, Red Paeony Root and other traditional herbs. The effects and mechanism of QN on cerebral ischemia were preliminarily studied in this paper. The protective effects on cerebral ischemia and ischemia-reperfusion were shown in results. The survival time of mice subjected to bilateral carotid artery ligation and the survival time of hypoxic mice were all obviously prolonged following QN treatment(14, 7, 3.5 g/kg, ig), which implied that QN improve energetic metabolism in brain tissue. QN could significantly decrease the cerebral water content, the cerebral index, the brain Vascular permeability in rats of acute incomplete brain ischemia reperfusion, which implied that QN has the protective effects on cerebral edema. Cerebral tissue morphology showed that neurological deficits score of rats subjected to acute incomplete brain ischemia reperfusion was ameliorated following administration of QN (9.2, 4.6, 2.3 g/kg, ig), which indicated that QN reduce the neuronal destroy in brain. The content of brain tissue malondialdehyde(MDA) was decreased while the activitiy of superoxide dismutase(SOD) was increased in ischemia-reperfusion injured rats following QN treatment(9.2, 4.6, 2.3 g/kg, ig); The content of brain tissue nitric oxide(NO) was decreased and the activitiy of GSH-peroxidase(GSH-px) was increased, which suggested that QN is effective in inhibiting cerebral free radicals, decreasing the neuronal poison induced by NO. This perhaps associated with the protection...
