Background:After one or several times of short-time ischemic reperfusion, tissues or organs can survive successive prolonged ischemia and reperfusion, a phenomenon so called ischemic preconditioning, IP. In order to decrease operation hemorrhage, Pringle blocked stem of liver manually in 1908. Since then, a series of surgery induced conditions, such as hepatic porta occlusion, selective interruption of liver blood flow, complete liver blood flow interruption et al., or the other clinical situations like liver transplantation and shock, are confronted with the associated problem of ischemia/reperfusion, I/R, injury. Therefore, I/R injury has become one of the challenging problems in the field of clinical research. To identify the possible mechanism of I/R injury, Marry etc., introduced the concept of IP when investigating I/R injury of the cardiac muscle in 1986. Subsequently, a large number of experiments proved that IP facilitates protection on the cardiac muscle from I/R injury and it can happen in different tissues and organs (heart, lung, brain, skeletal muscle and intestine) of different species (rat, pig, dog and human).
