Objective To explore the marital quality of male schizophrenics and their spouses and analyze related factors for making reasonable clinical decision and formulating practicable family-couple therapy program.Methods Sixty consecutive married male schizophrenics and their sixty female spouses registered between 2003-2004, (and satisfying CCMD-3 criteria for schizophrenia at the time of their inception into the Shandong Mental Health Center) were included in the study. The patients, aged from 22 to 55, total score of BPRS (The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale) ≤30, had a minimum illness duration of one year prior to entry into the study .Both male schizophrenics and their female spouses were without serious diseases, such as mood disorders, substance-related disorders, dementia and other nervous system diseases. The control groups, aged from 22 to 55, were composed of sixty normal female persons (normal female control group) and sixty normal male persons (normal male control group) who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Enrich Marital Inventory, Social Disability Screening Schedule (SDSS) and a self-made questionnaire were administered to evaluate the subject groups and related materials, such as, education, character, age at onset, illness duration, schizophrenia subtype and drugs were collected.
