Objective: To observe the effect of Copolymer-1 ( COP-1) on retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in elevated intraocular pressure ( EIOP ) rat models. Methods: SD rats were randomly divided into 3 groups , namely normal control group , mock-injected EIOP group and COP-1 injected EIOP group. The normal control rats were not injected , whereas the rats in the other two groups were injected with normal saline and COP-1 at hindfeet respectively. The optic nerves of rats were transected intraorbitally and a piece of gelform soaked in 5% fluorogold was applied to the ocular stump to retrogradely label the surviving RGCs. The numbers of labeled RGCs were counted using the conventional sampling method. Results: The number of the surviving RGCs in the mock-injected EIOP group was notably lower than that in COP-1 injected EIOP group( P < 0. 05) .Conclusion: COP-1 protects the RGCs from apoptosis under the condition of chronic EIOP.
