| Garcinia mangostana Linn, family Clusiaceae, knownas "the queen of fruits", is a tropical fruit which is mainlyfound in India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Now,this fruit is planted in large area in Guangxi and Hainanprovinces of China. The edible aril is white, soft, and juicywith a sweet, slightly acid taste and a pleasant aroma . Thepericarp of mangosteen has been used as a traditionalmedicine for the treatment of skin infections, diarrhoea, wounds, suppuration, chronic ulcer, leucorrhoea andgonorrhoea for many years in Thai.In order to find out more chemical constituents and itspharmacological activities, we had a comprehensiveresearch on it. The methods and results as follow:The dried pericarp of G. mangostana was extracted bymaceration with 85% EtOH for 12h, three times. Afterfilteration and evaporation of the solvent under reducedpressure, the combined crude ethanolic extract wassuspended in H2O to produce an aqueous solution, thenpartitioned in turn with benzin petroleum, CHCl3, EtOAcand n-BuOH. The different extracts were subjected tochromatography over a silica gel column, prep TLC, HPLC,crystallization et al, to give nine pure compounds.Structures of five compounds have been establishedand identified on the basis of chemical and spectroscopicevidence (UV, IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, 2DNMR, MS).They are α-mangostin (â… ), 7-methoxy-6-methyl-2,8-bis(3-methylbut-2-enyl)-1,3-dihydroxyxanthone (â…¡),β-Sitosterol (â…¢), rutin (â…£), and mangosteen trirhamnoside(â…¤). It is the first time that compound â…¡,â…¢,â…£,â…¤ wereisolated from the pericarp of this plant. And among themthe compound â…¡andâ…¤ are new compound. The phymacological activities of the crude ethanolicextract were studied , which were not done before. Theresult showed that the pericarp of G. mangostana had theeffect of reducing blood fat on the experiment rats withhigh blood fat. The satisfied results from chemical andpharmacological researches have raised our interesting inGarcinia mangostana Linn, the significance of whichshould appear in the future. |
