Objective: To observe the influence and the mechanism of Tang Wang Kang capsule, which had the functions of replenishing qi and nourishing yin, invigorating blood circulation to improve eyesight, on glucose retinal microvascular in DR rats and capillary permeability in mice. Methods: We used a model of DR rat with Streptozocin-induced. All DR rats treated after 3 months, which lasted for 2 months. Their retinas were studied by means of pathomorphology biochemistry index electron microscope, etc. Results: (1) Tang Wang Kang capsule can obviously improve the DR rats' survival condition. (2) Three months later , DM rats displayed some early symptoms of DR, such as thickness of basement membrane edema of endothelium cell edema and degeneration of mitochondrion in pericyte. After treatment of Tang Wang Kang capsule, the retinopathy had improved remarkably. (3) Compared with the model group, the content of glucose in Tang Wang Kang capsule group were decreased evidently (P<0.01). (4) Tang Wang Kang capsule can significantly inhibit the inflammation caused by xylene (P<0.05). (5) Tang Wang Kang capsule can decrease abdominal capillary permeability of mice (P<0.01). Conclusion: Three months later, there are changes in retinal ultra structure in rats with diabetic. Tang Wang Kang capsule has the effect of decreasing glucose capillary permeability, and has significant action of anti-inflammation. Early treatment with Tang Wang Kang capsule may be helpful in delaying or possible inhibiting the underlying cause of diabetic retinopathy.
