Objective To study the expression of Elf-1 and C-erbB-2 and the clinical significance in cervical squamous carcinoma(CSC). Methods The expression of Elf-1 and C-erbB-2 was detected by immunohistochemistrically in 60 cases of Cervical Squamous Carcinoma, 20 cases of cervical benign tumor (CBT) and 15 cases of cervical normal mucosa. Results Elf-1 was mainly expressed in nucleus and ocassionaly expressed in cytoplasm. C-erbB-2 was expressed in cell membrane, and also could be found in cytoplasm. The positive rate of Elf-1 and C-erbB-2 in CSC, CBT and cervical normal mucosa were71.66%,10.00%, 6.67%;51.66%, 5.00%, 0%, respectively. The differences of Elf-1 expressive rate between CSC and cervical normal mucosa, CBT were all obviously significant (X~2=20.91,23.18;p<0.01), but was not significant between cervical normal mucosa and CBT (X~2=0.12;p>0.05).The expressive rate of C-erbB-2 was also significantly different between CSC and cervical normal mucosa, CBT (X~2=13.21,13.61;p<0.01), but also was not significant between cervical normal mucosa and CBT (X~2=0.08,p>0.05). Among the different histopathological grade groups, the expressive intensity of Elf-1 and C-erbB-2 were all significantly different (HC=19.4300,10.2954;p=0.0001,0.0058);among the different clinical stage groups, the expressive intensity of Elf-1 and C-erbB-2 were also significantly different (Hc=12.9900,9.2126;P=0.0046,0.0266);between the two groups of lymph node metastasis or not, the expressive intensity of Elf-1 and C-erbB-2 were all significantly different (p=0.0002,0.0010);the expressive intensity of Elf-1 and C-erbB-2 became strong along with the decreased histopathological grades, the increased clinical stages and lymph node metastasis. Positive correlation was found between the expressive intensity of Elf-1 and C-erbB-2, r=0.6557,p=0.0001 (p<0.05). Conclusions 1.Low expression of Elf-1 can be seen in cervical normal mucosa and CBT, and upregulated expression can be seen in CSC. It indicates that the expression of Elf-1 correlates with the occurrence of CSC. 2.No expression of C-erbB-2 can be seen in cervical normal mucosa and low expression in CBT, and upregulated expression can be seen in CSC. It indicates that the expression of C-erbB-2 correlates with the occurrence of CSC.3. The expressive intensity of Elf-1 and C-erbB-2 is colsely correlated with histopathological grade, clinical stages and lymph node metastasis. This demonstrates that the expression of Elf-1 and C-erbB-2 correlates with the development of CSC.4. Positive correlation is found among Elf-1 and C-erbB-2, which reveals that they may co-act in the occurrence and development of CSC. 5. United detecting the expression of Elf-1 and C-erbB-2 may be served as the molecular biological index of evaluating infiltration and metastasis, it may be useful for diagnosis of early CSC and evaluating prognosis in CSC.
