Objective: To investigate the expression of Ki- 67 , Bax and p73 in hilar cholangiocarcinoma (HCC) and the relationship between them. Methods: 35 cases of HCC, paired with 20 cases normal bile duct tissue, were analysed by immunohistochemical PV6000 method. ResuIts:The Ki-67 Labeling Index(LI) in HCC and normal hilar bile duct were 37.6±15.3 and 0,respectively .Their difference was significant(P<0.01). The expression of ki-67 protein was correlated with local lymphnode metastasis and clinical stage. We also found ki-67 labeling index increase from well to poorly differentiated HCC. Bax Labeling Index in HCC and normal hilar bile duct were 32.4±17.6 and 11.2±7.9 respectively .Their difference was significant(P<0.01). Bax Labeling Index was related to local lymphnode metastasis. P73 positivity was detected in 31.4% of carcinoma specimens, none in normal tissue. Their difference was significant(P<0.01). p73 positivity was related to survival time. Conclusion: Ki-67 LI reflects the degree of tumor cell proliferation, UICC stage, metastasis and may be a useful predictor of tumor prognosis. Bax might be one of the proapoptosis gene. The results indicate that Bax might be associated with the differentiation and the prognosis of HCC. P73 genes may play an important role in the development of HCC .The detection of P73 protein may help to understand its biological characteristics and provide possible target for judging prognosis.
