Objective:To explore the protective effect of salvia miltiorrhiza for enteral nutrition in S-MODS model rats, to explore a new treament to preventS-MODS.Methods: 70 Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: control group (n=10), model group (n=20), nutrition fibre group (n=20) and salvia miltiorrhiza for enteral nutrition group (n=20). The experiment period was 12 days. They were given Sodium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, nutrition fibre and salvia miltiorrhiza independently by intragastric administration for EN every day for 11 days. On the fourth day, Sodium Chloride was administered intravenously in normal group and endotoxin 3mg/kg was administered intravenously in other groups . Blood routine was measured at 24 hours before and after giving the endotoxin. At the end of experiment, blood routine, biochemistry index (ALB,AST,ALT,BUN,Cr,CK and CK-MB),the uperoxide dismutase(SOD) activity , the content of malondialdehyde(MDA),nitric oxide(NO) and GPS-PX ,the concentrations of IL-6,TNF-a and IL-1β were measured. We sent small intestine, liver, lung and Kidney pathology at the end of experiment. Results: The model succeed by clinical manifestation, blood routine and pathology. We observed that compared with other groups ,clinical symptom was improved, blood routine recuperated and pathology damage was relieved in salvia miltiorrhiza for enteral nutrition group. The SOD activity and GPS-PX content in salvia mihiorrhiza for EN group were significantly higher than those of nutrition fibre group and model group(P<0.05);The nitric oxide(NO) content in salvia mihiorrhiza for EN group was significantly higher than that of model group;the serum MDA level was significantly decreased than that of model group and nutrition fibre group (P < 0.05). The concentrations of IL-6,TNF-a and IL -1 in salvia miltiorrhiza for EN group were lower than model group and nutrition fibre group(P < 0.05).Conclusions: Salvia miltiorrhiza for enteral nutrition could prevent gut function damage, protect intestinal mucosa by reducing the oxidative damage and significantly decreased the concentrations of Pro-inflammatory cytokines. Salvia miltiorrhiza for enteral nutrition also could also relive the inflammatory responseto decrease the damage of the tissues and the organs so it could inhibit the development of S-MODS.
