OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship of expression Caveolin-1 and thrombospondin(TSP), a reflection of angiogenesis, in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC), peritumoral and normal renal tissue. And to assess the levels of Caveolin-1 in a series of RCC specimens of varying stage and grade and the correlation between Caveolin-1 and TSP.PATIENTS AND METHODS The expression of Caveolin-1 and TSP were tested by SP immunohistochemical method in 32 cases of RCC and 20 cases of peritumoral tissue who had undergone radical nephrectomy and 16 normal renal tissue. RESULTS: Caveolin-1 has more high expression in cases of RCC than peritumoral tissue or normal renal tissues, however ,the expression of TSP is adverse in RCC. The expression of Caveolin-1 in RCC, peritumoral tissue and normal renal tissue has significantly difference. Increased expression of Caveolin-1 is associated with neoplastic growth, metastasis and a worse prognosis in RCC. CONCLUSIONS Caveolin-1 expression is significantly associated with RCC stage and grade, but the correlation isn't significantly difference between Caveolin-1 and TSP. There are independent factor in expression of RCC. TSP can inhibit growth, invade and metastasis of RCC due to he can inhibit angiogenesis. These results suggest that Caveolin-1 is a possible potential anticipate factor during neoplastic growth, invade and worse prognosis.
