Objective: To study the correlation between left ventricular myocardial remodeling and carotid remodeling in essential hypertensive (EH) patients. Methods: Carotid and cardiac ultrasonography were performed on 76cases with hypertension and 36 control cases. Left ventricular mass index (LVMI), intima-media thickness in common carotid artery (CCA-IMT) and its bifurcation (BIMT), plaque and hemodynamic indices were respectively measured in common carotid artery and internal carotid artery. According to left ventricular mass index, hypertensive patients were divided into LVMI normal group and LVMI increased group. Results: (1) The IMT and BIMT were higher in EH group than those in the control group (P< 0.05) , LVMI increased group was the highest among the three groups. (2) Compared with the control group, peak systolic velocity (PSV) and end diastolic velocity (EDV) of carotid artery were lower in EH group, PSV/EDV, resistance index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) were higher. ( 3 ) The prevalence of carotid plaque in EH group was higher than control group. (4) There were positive correlations between LVMI and CCA-IMT, BIMT, PI, RI, and negative correlations between LVMI and PSV, EDV. Conclusions: The occurrence of carotid remodeling was earlier than that of left ventricular myocardial remodeling in EH patients, and there was a close correlation between them.
