Objectives Learn about the status of reproductive health in the program area, evaluate the effect of integrated health education on Reproductive Tract Infections/Sexually Transmitted Diseases (RTIs/STDs), which were carried through in the program area, find out the influencing factors which affect the effect of health education, and bring up the feasible suggestions for relative government departments. Methods Integrated health education was applied to the target population in the program area. A quasi-experimental design was used to collect data and six counties were selected from 32 project counties as intervention group, while six non-project counties was takes as controls which were similar in number of population and economic level to the counties as selected, when the eventual evaluation for the program was implemented for learning about the reproductive service status in the program area, analyzing the difference of integrated health education's effect and finding out the influencing factors which affected the RTIs/STDs knowledge among reproductive age population by using logistic regression analysis. Results STDs reporting rate among reproductive age population in the program area was 140.69 per 100 000 people and RTIs diagnosis-therapy rate was 1318.51 per 100 000 people in 2002. Lab techniques of detecting RTIs/STDs in county hospital were better than in hospital for maternal and child health and in the village hospital it was the worst, which accorded with the require of hygeianresource. The results which health education was evaluated indicated that there were significant impacts on knowledge about RTIs/STDs among the target population. Firstly the knowledge rates of transmission, risks, symptoms. management, and prevention of RTIs/STDs in intervention group was higher than those in control group. Secondly health education was one of the primary-factors, which was associated with the RTIs/STDs.There were several factors which affected the target population to know about the RTIs/STDs, such as whether or not accepted health education, level of education, age, gender and out for work or not etc. So the level of education, age and gender etc. were thought over when health education was implemented. Conclusions RTIs/STDs among reproductive age population is more serious and the detected ability for RTIs/STDs of medical institutions should be improved. Health education is impactful method, which can solve reproductive problems among reproductive age population in the rural area of China from now on. Integrated health education had significant impact on knowledge about RTIs/STDs among reproductive age population. Suggesting that related department should establish a long-time, effective health education system about RTIs/STDs and make use of various methods such as propagandizing by common media and medical institutions, pasting propagandist^ pictures, professional consultation to educate the target population, so that they can improve their reproductive attitude and behavior.
