Objective: To set up the norms ot Youth Sell-Report (YSR-1991) in Chengdu City of China. Methods: A normative sample, total 1740 subjects aged 11 to 18 years old, was drawn from urban district in Chengdu City. A referred sample was 300 adolescents aged 11 to 18 years old who were referred to the department of psychiatry, West China Hospital, Sichuan University. A nonreferred sample, total 300 subjects, was drawn from the normative sample. All of the subjects completed the General Information Questionnaire and YSR. The data were analyzed by using Chi-Square test, analysis of variance, and Relative Operating Characteristic type of analysis. Results: 1. The sensitivity of total problem score of YSR was low if 90th percentile was assigned as the cutpoint of norms and the score of 75th percentile was found to have the best discrimination for both of boys and girls.2. There was no significant effect of genders for total problem scores. The girls had higher scores in some items that were the internalizing group of syndromes, and the boys had higher scores in some items that were the externalizing group of syndromes.3. There was middle effect of age for total problem scores. The total problem scores reported by boys and girls tended to be increasing with age. Items, that were effected by age mostly, scored higher in older adolescents and were predominantly the internalizing group of syndromes.4. There were significant differences between referred and nonreferred adolescents in total problem scores and most items that scored higher in referred adolescents. There was middle effect of referral status for total problem scores. The items were mostly effected by referral status were the internalizing group of syndromes. YSR had good discriminative validity. Conclusion: 1. The score of 75th percentile of total score of YSR was found to have the best discrimination.2. There was no significant effect of genders for total problem scores. The girls had higher scores in some items that were the internalizing group of syndromes, and the boys had higher scores in some items that were the externalizing group of syndromes.3. The total problem scores reported by boys and girls tended to be increasing with age. Items scored higher in older adolescents were predominantly were the internalizing group of syndromes.4. YSR had good discriminative validity, and better sensitivity in adolescents for the internalizing problems than externalizing problems. YSR was a good instrument used to assess emotionaland behavior problems for the adolescents in china.
