Objective: To explore the role of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-I) and Leptin in the growth and development of preschool children born small for gestational age (SGA).Methods: 60 preschool children born small for gestational age (SGA group) and 40 children born appropriate for gestational age with the same age (control group)were included. The concertrations of serum IGF-I and Leptin were measured by radioimmunoassay in both SGA and control groups. Anthropometric indicators were also obtained. Statistic methods of t test, X ~2test, pearson correlation test were used to analyze the results.Result: (1) The HtSDS was 0.42 ± 1.14 in control group and -0.83 ± 1.20 in SGA group, and significant difference existed between the two groups (P<0.01). The WtSDS was 0.10 ± 0.97 in control group, -0.78 ± 1.24 in SGA group, and there also existed significance between the two groups (P<0.01). (2) There was positive correlation between age and the level of IGF-I inserum, but no correlation between sex and IGF-I in both groups. (3) The level of serum IGF-I in 2~year-old children of the control group was 121.70 ±35.92ng/ml, 158.98 + 91.14ng/ml in SGA group, and there was no significant difference between the two groups (P>0.05). In 4~7 year-old children of the control group, the level of the serum IGF-I was 293.12 ± 139.80ng/ml, in SGA group it was 224.98 + 123.04ng/ml, and no significant difference existed between the two groups (P>0.05).? When both the HtSDS and WtSDS were less than -2, there was positive correlation between Leptin and IGF-I in serum, but when they both excessed 0,there was no correlation between them. Conclusions: ? In preschool period, SGA children had shorter stature than normal children though the concertration of IGF-1 of SGA children was not lower than normal children. It suggested that in the preschool children born small for gestational age an IGF-I resistance may exist. ? There was positive correlation between serum Leptin and IGF-I in malnutritional children, but in normal children there was no correlation between them.
