Microalgae are a potential source of new bioactive substances and many high-value biochemicals. The marine microalga Porphyridium cruentum attracts increasing interest for it contains many valuable compounds such as sulfated exopolysaccharides , polyunsaturated fatty acids and phycoerythrin that are applied in food and pharmaceutical industries. The present study investigated anti-diabetic activity of P. cruentum biomass and its polysaccharides in experimental diabetic mice induced by alloxan . The immunity functions of P. cruentum biomass and its polysaccharides were also investigated. It was found that P .cruentum could significantly reduced the level of blood glucose (P<0.001), a trend towards lower plasma triglyceride and total cholesterol level was observed in diabetic mice fed algae biomass. In addition the activity of plasma SOD was significantly enhanced in diabetic mice ig 1200mg/kg algae biomass (P<0.01).The diabetic mice fed the biomass gained less water and food than the diabetic model mice . The preventive potential of P .cruentum biomass on diabetes indicated that it could significantly reduce the blood glucose, lower plasma triglyceride level was observed in mice fed the biomass. The results indicated that P .cruentum could significantly reduced the level of blood glucose and effectively enhance the ability of anti-oxidation in the diabetic mice induced by alloxan. The hypoglycemic and anti-oxidant activities of polysaccharide obtained from P .cruentum was investigated in diabetic mice induced by alloxan. Three weeks of treatment with polysaccharide significantly reduced the level of fasting blood glucose (P<0.01), and significantly enhance the activity of plasma SOD in diabetic mice(P<0.05). a trend towards lower plasma total cholesterol level was...
