Rectal Cancer is one of the most common malignant diseases in the digestive tract. The incidence rate is 30-50 per hundred thousand every year. Surgical resection is the main method of treatment for Rectal Cancer. The main physiologic function of the rectum is elimination of fecal material and fecal continence. However, the anatomy and normal physiologic function of the rectum would be changed after rectal surgery. This change would lead to alter bowel movement and fecal continence after the operation, which often affects patients' quality of life. So far, the low anterior resection method with sparing of the anus is the main surgical approach for resection of rectal cancer. The goal of this topic is to examine the direct relationship between the surgery and bowel movement regulation, to promulgate the mechanism of bowel movement alteration after the surgery, to promote new techniques, and methods for improving the quality of life.
