Objective: to study the clinical characteristics about the diagnosis, treatment of the esophageal leiomyoma.Methods: retrospectively analyzed the diagnosis and treatments of 89 cases of esophageal leiomyoma in our department from 1995 to 2004.Results: there were 5 cases misdiagnosed. Among them, 3 cases misdiagnosed as other disease before operation, 2 cases as the carcinoma of the esophagus and and 1 case as the mediastinal tumor. 2 cases were misdiagnosed as the esophageal leiomyoma but the operation convinced not, which 1 case was oppressed by the aorteric arch and 1 case was oppressed by the mediastinal lymphnode. 28 cases were treated by the endoscopic resection and 61 cases were treated by the transthoracic surgery which included 47 cases of right thoracotomy and 14 cases of left thoracotomy.The tumor was single in 85 cases and multiple in 4 cases (the maxinum number is 9). The tumor shape was oval, dumbbell, horseshoe and irregular. Tumor surrounded the esophagus less than half circumference in 59 cases, more than half in 26 cases and involved the whole circumference in 4 cases. The maximum tumor size was 17cmX 18cmX10cm and the minimum tumor size was 0. 5X0. 5X0. 5cm. The maximum longitude was 23 cm. The tumor was extraluminal in 3 cases, intraluminal polypoid in 1 case and intramural in all other cases. All the cases' diagnoses were convinced by the pathology after the surgery.
