Objective: Comparison was made between laparoscopic cholecystectomy and open cholecystectomy in recovery after surgery, security and clinical effect. Method: In our trial, 1,227 patients were randomised to laparoscopic or open cholecystectomy. Comparison was made in postoperative hospitalization days, postoperative dysfunction and incidence of complications. Result: LC group was less than OC group in postoperative dysfunction and recovery time of gastroentestinal function. The mean operation time was 2.4 minute shorter for laparoscopic cholecystectomy, but no statistic difference. While median postoperative hospital stay was 3.1 days shorter after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The hospital costs were about RMB 2000 less for the laparoscopic procedure. The total incidence of complications after both procedures was 0.65%, and no significant difference between the two procedures. Conclusion: Compared to open cholecystectomy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy results in minimal trauma, less postoperative dysfunction, shorter hospital stay and less costly. There was no significant difference in incidence of complications between the two procedures.
